What To Know About The Uber Lite App

In the race to dominate India, Uber is introducing the Uber Lite app created to reduce data usage. India is a densely populated country with a population of over 380 million people and counting. By introducing a Lite app, Uber is bound to win over millions of users who are looking for an inexpensive way to request a ride.

According to Uber, “Uber Lite is less than 5MB to download (that’s equivalent to just 3 selfies).” Although designed in India, the app will be introduced to all Uber markets. The app will retain the “core functionality” of the original Uber app like the in-app support and also sharing trip details with loved ones.

The rideshare giant also boasted in a blog post that the “reimagined interface” will make it easier to book rides even when your internet connection is “spotty”. Users with limited data plans will no longer have to worry about data consumption as the Lite app is designed to respond in 300-milliseconds.

More About The Uber Lite App

The Uber Lite app is compatible with all android phones which are quite popular in countries like India. By reducing data consumption while using the app, users have one less thing to worry about.

The app will use GPS to guess destinations to minimize typing. Also, caches will be used to store visited places so that users can access this information in off-line mode.

Conclusion

In developing markets like India and Africa, the lite app is a welcome development because users mostly have limited data plans. The app is currently available for download in the following Indian cities: Jaipur, Hyderabad, and Delhi. As much as this is a welcome development, the Uber Lite app is hardly the first of its kind. Ola, Uber’s fierce rival in Asia introduced the lite version of its app in early 2018.

Uber is struggling to hold on to its stance in Asia. The company sold its South-East operation to its Singapore based rival Grab. By introducing a Lite version, it could mean that Uber is looking to increase its hold in India, its last standing market in the region.

More About Ofo Bikeshare Service

The sharing economy has brought significant improvements to many industries by revolutionizing the way businesses are carried out. At the fore front of the sharing economy is the rideshare behemoth, Uber. With the goal to make global transportation as seamless as running water, Uber found a way to connect riders with drivers who want to use their car as a means of transporting people. Uber’s business model has since been introduced into various businesses like logistics, delivery, and restaurants to name a few.

Ridesharing is gaining strides globally and not only with cars. To ensure seamless transportation, bikes, trucks, and even rickshaws are being used to simplify transportation. In densely populated countries like India and China, bikes and rickshaws are being used to decongest roads and reduce carbon footprints. In China, bike sharing startups like Mobike, Ofo and Bluegogo are seeking to improve the country’s transportation system. To learn how bike sharing works, we will shed more light on the Beijing startup, ofo bikeshare service.

More About ofo Bikeshare service

Officially launched in 2015 as a bikeshare service, Ofo was founded in 2014 as a service that was focused on bicycle tourism. After the official launch in Beijing, the service gathered momentum as a bikeshare service with over 20,000 users. In 2016, the service spread to other cities in China. After an influx of funds from China’s rideshare giant Didi Chuxing and the tech firm, Xiaomi, the service spread outside of China in 2017. Now, Ofo has operations in Singapore, U.S, the United Kingdom, and Sydney in Australia.

How ofo works

  • Download the ofo mobile app on iOS and Android
  • Register your information and
  • Enter your payment method and you are ready to go

Getting a bike

  • Use the map function in the app to find nearby available bicycles.
  • Once you reach an available bike, scan the QR code on the license plate or enter the plate number manually into the app to unlock it then you can begin your ride.
  • Once you finish your trip, park the bike in an appropriate location, make sure you lock it then end the trip in-app.

How much does the service cost?

Rides in ofo’s network cost $1/ph. To pay for your trip, you can use electronic payment cards, paypal or even pay with cash. These options vary by location. You can use the in-app wallet feature which allows you add a payment method.

Once you unlock an ofo bike, be aware that the ride meter automatically activates and starts’ running until the ride is completed in app. You can rent the bike for as long as you wish.

Once a ride is completed, users can park the bicycle “outside of the pedestrian right of way that complies with local laws and does not obstruct traffic” or the company’s “identified ‘Preferred Parking Zones’ (PPZ) for ofo users. In the event that a PPZ is unavailable, you can park at any public bicycle rack.”

What this means for users

Bike sharing is a great way to reduce the number of cars on the road especially in cities that are densely populated. It will not only reduce traffic congestion but make the roads safer and the environment cleaner. Now you can get to those appointments on time without fear of getting held up in traffic.

Uber Services: All About UberGO

As we know, Uber has gained quite a reputation as a revolutionary in the transportation sector by creating seamless travel and decongesting roads through ride-sharing. With various services that satisfy diverse customers’ need, Uber is fast becoming a household name.

No matter your need, Uber has tried to meet it by introducing different Uber services. They include: UberX, which is the mid-tier cost Uber service; UberBLACK – the most expensive and classiest service with black high-end vehicles; UberXL – the 6 passenger version of UberX; UberSELECT – the service that sits between the UberX and the UberBLACK services; then the UberSUV – which is the 6 passenger version of UberBLACK. Some cities offer a variation of these services to suit their markets. One of these variations is the UberGO service. In this post, we will shed some light on UberGO and in which markets you will find this service.

More About UberGO

UberGO is a chauffeur driven hatchback currently available in India. This is the cheapest Uber service worldwide and is even said to be cheaper than the price of riding in an auto rickshaw and the popular UberX.

The typical UberGO vehicle is a small 4 seater hatchback car that is big enough to carry 4 passengers and has air conditioning. However, this car is not large enough to carry too much luggage.

Uber announced in one of the company’s blogs that, “We are excited to announce the launch of UberGO; a spanking new range of low cost, chauffeur-driven hatchbacks (think Etios Liva) that roll onto the streets of every Uber city in India today. For this launch, drivers are able to connect to the Uber platform using devices provided by our technology partner, Huawei.”

Other vehicles that can be found under the UberGO category are Maruti Ritz and Maruti Swift.

Uber launched in India with the UberBLACK service which is considered Uber’s classiest and priciest service. It was inevitable that other affordable services would be introduced into India. India is a populous country with a huge number of people living below poverty line. People needed services that they can afford hence; the UberGO and UberX services.

We hope to see this service in other populous countries all over the world soon.

Pathao vs Uber: Rideshare In Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a densely populated country of over 160 million people making it the most densely populated large country in the world. It is safe to say that commuters will have a hard time in traffic and the country will benefit from rideshare. Rideshare companies aim to reduce the number of cars on the road especially in populous countries where traffic can be nightmarish. Therefore, the launch of rideshare companies like Uber and Pathao will go a long way in easing traffic congestion in Bangladesh.

Uber launched in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh on the 22nd of November, 2016. With presence in over 400 cities worldwide, the congested city of Bangladesh is the next city to experience the revolution that Uber introduces to the transport sector. Uber has teamed up with Bangladesh’s largest mobile operator, Grameenphone to reach Dhaka’s 18 million population.

Uber currently has 3 services operating in Dhaka. They include UberMOTO, UberX and UberPREMIER. UberMOTO is Uber’s motorbike service while UberX is the mid-tier cost affordable Uber service. Uber charges a Base Fare of 30 Tk for the UberMOTO service and a Base Fare of 40 Tk for the UberX service.

Passengers can request car rides and get picked up from any location. UberPREMIER launched in 2017 to meet the needs of riders who want to ride in style and plush comfort. This service delivers service in superior quality sedans with professionally trained driver partners. Uber charges a Base Fare of 80 Tk for this service.

Pathao, on the other hand provides bike services to passengers in Bangladesh with promises to bring car services to the city of Dhaka soon. Pathao rides are currently available in only Dhaka and Chittagong with goals to expand to other major cities.

OLA In India Takes On Uber With OLA Play

Last year, Uber’s fierce rival Ola, launched an in-ride entertainment platform called Ola Play in India. The aim of this innovative feature is to make long rides more entertaining and luxurious. Ola partnered with Qualcomm to build interactive devices mounted in cars. This device called Ola Play, boasts touch-screen hardware with two consoles –one for the driver and another for the passenger. Passengers can sync their phones with the device to listen to music and also watch all they want online.

This seems like a response to Uber’s partnership with Spotify that allows passengers play their playlists on Spotify as they travel. Granted, Uber’s innovation isn’t as integrating as Ola’s Ola Play but it seems Uber is not completely off track. It doesn’t seem like this move on the part of Ola is a real game changer as people will always look out for the best price especially in an emerging market like India.

The rideshare company that can offer the basic needs at the most affordable price will surely take the cake. India is a huge market and Uber and Ola are presently fighting a turf war with Ola currently winning in the country. Ola currently controls over 60 percent of the Indian market and growing. Can this success be attributed to the in-ride entertainment? Obviously not.

Ola is a home grown rival while Uber is a global phenomenon. It is only fair that Ola will enjoy more patronage since it launched in Mumbai 3 years before Uber came into the scene.

However, Uber boasts a higher presence globally than Ola and is more concerned in growing it’s footprint across the world. In a show of power, Uber recently launched in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh on the 22nd of November, 2016. |

With presence in over 400 cities worldwide, the congested city of Bangladesh is the next city to experience the revolution that Uber introduces to the transport sector. Uber has teamed up with Bangladesh’s largest mobile operator, Grameenphone to reach Dhaka’s 18 million population. Unlike in most American cities, Uber will accept cash payments as well as card payments. This is a strategy that Uber initiates in emerging markets in order to reach the percentage of unbanked populace.

Uber will continue to face fierce rivalry from competitors. It’s up to the rideshare giant to devise new and innovative ways to keep customers satisfied.

Uber Rival – Namma Tygr App To Launch In India

Uber and Ola in India are currently enjoying successes as the top players in the taxi industry. This has always been a source of displeasure for taxi drivers and other taxi companies. Uber and Ola drivers are not subjected to the same regulations as traditional drivers. Despite this, most Uber and Ola drivers are unhappy as they believe the rideshare giants are taking too much off their earnings. Uber drivers have requested for more benefits and less commission taken off their earnings. This saw former Uber and Ola drivers’ band together to launch a new app called Namma Tygr app that hopes to provide cheaper alternatives to commuters who have been ripped off by other cab aggregators.

The company is backed by Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and will be called Namma Tygr app formerly HDK Cabs. The app launched on the 31st of October, 2017.  The company is registered as ‘Huli Technologies started by the former Uber, TaxiForSure and Ola (UTO) Drivers and Owners Association. The association partnered with Savetur Digital Private Limited to launch and operate the Namma Tygr app.

Namma Tygr app founders have stated it will claim a commission of 12% for every ride. Drivers will also enjoy great benefits like accidental and vehicle insurance. The company claims that over 8,000 drivers have applied and undergone verification. There will be no shared service like the UberPOOL offered by Uber.

The News Minute blog quoted the company saying “After Bengaluru, we will start our operations in Mysuru and then Mangaluru. We plan to launch all over India in the coming years”. “We expect that drivers currently attached with existing cab aggregators will join us. We are giving better facilities to the drivers at a very small percentage of commission”.

Drivers are being trained in batches of 15-20 at the company’s headquarters in Indira Nagar. They are being given training on app installation, downloading and other service operations. Drivers will also enjoy Rs 2 lakh in medical insurance cover and there will be 10 emergency-patrol vehicles to support both drivers and customers all around the clock.

Passengers Benefits

Surge pricing has always been a bone of contention between rideshare companies and passengers. The comoany has promised that passengers will enjoy fixed prices with no surge pricing or any other hidden fees.

The Namma Tygr App will offer services in Mumbai, Kolkata, Ranchi and Indore. The company hopes to see more Uber and Ola drivers signup with the service. Passengers can request a mini hatchback option at Rs 12.50 per km and a sports sedan utility vehicle option at Rs 18.50 per km.
